UC Women's Center

Women's Center at the University of Cincinnati

GENERAL INFO
The University of Cincinnati Women’s Center is one of the oldest continually operating university women’s centers in the United States. Since 1978, the center has worked to address student needs at UC. Established in 1978 as Women's Programs and Services, the office first served as a referral center for female students. The small, initial staff connected students and staff to resources and events that were off-campus.

Today we continue to offer a variety of programs and services. We are centrally located on UC's West Campus and provide a comfortable, informal space for students to meet, talk and study. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff can help answer questions, locate resources and help address personal, academic or work-related concerns. Students can participate with our Peer Advocate program, build upon leadership and activism skills through our class offerings or take part in our social programs with their peers. Female student leaders are honored at the annual C-Ring event, held since 1922, to recognize UC’s outstanding senior women. We also continue to offer a 24-hour help line staffed by peer advocates trained to provide support for those experiencing violence or abuse in their lives.

The Center- Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Greater Cincinnati

The Center

GENERAL INFO
Founded in 1993, The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Greater Cincinnati was an outgrowth of a committee formed by the Greater Cincinnati Gay & Lesbian Coalition (GCGLC) in 1990.  After a number of open community meetings the Center was formed and eventually incorporated in the State of Ohio and registered with the Internal Revenue Service as a 501c3 organization. The Center originally opened on December 17, 1993 at Longworth Hall off Pete Rose Way.

The Center was then home to the now defunct Gay & Lesbian Switchboard.  In 1996, the Center moved to 230 E. Ninth where its grand re-opening was held on October 11, corresponding to National Coming Out Day. Finally, the Center inked the lease to its current home at 4119 Hamilton Avenue in Northside on November 23, 1998.

Today, the Center offers a variety of information-related resources, computers, magazines, periodicals, digital TV, music center and a "honor system" lending library. Additionally, the Center holds a monthly Coalition meeting, various group socializers and educational forums. The Center is available as a meeting space for organizations and individuals.

The primary monetary support for the Center comes from the annual Pride Night event hosted by Kings Island and contributions from the general community.  Membership costs $35 for individuals/$15 for students for which the member receives the right to vote in the annual board elections.

The Center is a tenant in a building that was constructed in 1911 and is not readily accessible to differently abled individuals.

SERVICES

We do not provide counseling, mental health, legal services, or employment services of any kind. The Center will refer you to various professionals and/or on-line resources for further assistance.
